Crown closes case in police custody death

The prosecution yesterday closed its case in the manslaughter trial of two police officers.

Constables Akiel Smith and Carl Smith are accused of the unlawful killing of Aaron Rolle at the Southern Police Station on February 9, 2013.

Rolle died of a ruptured bowel caused by blunt force trauma, according to forensic pathologist Dr. Caryn Sands. According to Sands, the injury was sustained during a window of two to 24 hours.

Prosecutor Kendra Kelly closed the Crown’s case following the testimony of their immediate supervisor, Sergeant 596 Kingsley Bain.
