The 2018 Sir Durward Knowles Junior National Regatta, in which some 120 sailors are expected to participate, will be held on April 6 and 7 at Taino Beach.

Phedra M. Rahming, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources, added that the theme for the event which is being held for the third year is “Never Give Up,” the mantra of Sir Durward Knowles, the country’s greatest sailor.

“While this regatta has everything to do with sailing in The Bahamas, represented by our youth programme, it also celebrates the life and legacy of the late Sir Durward Knowles, our first Olympic champion. The Regatta Desk in the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources embraced the challenge of working with partners throughout the country to develop sailors who will one day return The Bahamas to the top of the podium in Olympic and championship sailing.”

She added that through technology, regatta fans will be able to watch the event which will be live streamed to the Facebook page, Regatta Desk Bahamas, and to a large screen on shore.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Member of Parliament for the Central Grand Bahama Constituency, Iram Lewis, said that March will end with the hosting of Carifta Track and Field in New Providence, followed by the Junior National Regatta in April. All of this, he continued, is in keeping with the government’s belief that the youth are the future.

Participants in the Junior National Regatta are expected from New Providence, Andros, Harbour Island, Abaco, Exuma and the host, Grand Bahama.

Partnering with the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources to host this event are: Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Works, Ministry of Education, the Bahamas Sailing Association, the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the Grand Bahama Regatta and Homecoming Committee.

Dubbed a family event, there will be a number of events for adults and children to enjoy.
