Get in Shape with BTVI's Fun Run Walk

For the fourth consecutive year, The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) is seeking to help staff, faculty, students and the general public get in shape by participating in its annual Fun Run Walk this Saturday, March 24th.

Each year, BTVI has approximately 100 participants and is encouraging the public to get involved, making steps to a healthier lifestyle.

BTVI’s Associate Vice President of Fund Development, Alicia Thompson, said the institution is seeking to raise the consciousness of how invaluable healthy living is.

“We do not believe that one event will do the trick. However, we support the ancient Chinese proverb that says, ‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.’ We want people to see our Fun Run Walk as the first step to a healthier lifestyle.

We truly believe that healthy eating coupled with exercise can go a long way,” said Ms. Thompson.

Beginning at 6 am, the route is from BTVI’s campus, heading north on Old Trail Road and then west onto Robinson Road, north onto Marathon Road, west onto Wulff Road, north onto Mackey Street, to the foot of the old bridge and then back to the campus, via the same route.

Following the Fun Run Walk, there will be free health screenings by the Healthy Lifestyles Unit of the Ministry of Health, including blood pressure and cholesterol checks, in addition to health talks and lots of prizes. Participants will also get a free chair massage, courtesy of BTVI massage students.

Ms. Thompson thanked corporate Bahamas for its support, expressing that without partners the event would not be a successful.

“It speaks volumes when businesses and organizations join us in this health and wellness initiative. In fact, in 2015 we had Minister of Health, the Honourable Duane Sands join us and our Board of Directors are always supportive.

We are grateful they understand the importance of this worthy cause. If one isn’t healthy, it makes focusing on education that much more difficult. We want our staff, faculty, students and the wider community to be productive, and being healthy makes that possible,” said Ms. Thompson.

She noted that each individual is duty bound to take care of his or her body.

“Everyone in this country probably knows someone who has heart disease, diabetes or another disease that may be avoided through healthy eating and exercise, perhaps walking for at least half an hour three times per week. The BTVI family urges citizens to join us on Saturday.

As it is now the spring season, be intentional and turn over a new leaf. Let’s do this together,” urged Ms. Thompson.

The opportunity to register in the 2018 BTVI Fun Run Walk is still available by calling 502-6300 /21.

Participants receive warm up instructions from Fitness Trainer, Raymond Tucker.

Chairman - then BTVI Deputy Chairman - Kevin Basden, presenting a tablet to 1st place winner of the Male 20 – 30 years old category, Timothy Linden.
