With thousands of women diagnosed with Breast Cancer on an annual basis, in the Bahamas and around the world, the fight to raise awareness and save lives has become even more critical.
As part of its civic commitment BTC has for years been a supporter of Breast Cancer research and awareness.
This year that commitment saw members of Team BTC lace up their trainers and don their track suits to ‘Race for the Cure’ at the 9th Annual Susan G. Comen Marathon Bahamas event held in New Providence last weekend.
“Everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed, who has fought cancer and won and even those who have lost their fight” explained VP of Customer Experience at BTC, Eldri Ferguson-Mackey, “BTC is proud of the fact that we’ve been able to lend our support to the fight as well”.
BTC’s employees were among thousands of persons who turned out in support. Saturday’s race, dedicated specifically to the Breast Cancer Movement, was a 3.1 mile run/walk starting at Montagu Beach and finishing east of the ‘old’ Paradise Island bridge, with BTC’s very own Don Laing, Senior Associate of Customer Experience, winning overall in the Masters 5K male division with the time of twenty-three minutes and fifty-nine seconds (23:59).
BTC’s Race Dominance continued into Sunday at the official Marathon Bahamas Relays and Half-Marathon competitions.
In the relays, Team BTC – dubbed ‘The Avengers’ – ran 26.2 miles starting at the popular Junkanoo Beach site circling the island and ending at Arawak Cay.
The Avengers, comprised of BTC Senior Technical Associate in IT, Melvin Rolle, Hilvana Cash, Reynon Hudson & Team Bahamas Olympian Miriam Byfield walked away with a second place finish in the Co-ed Division with a time of three hours, fifty-two minutes and thirty-five seconds (3:52:35).
The 10 mile half marathon followed a similar route detouring via the northern shore of Cable Beach and ending at the entrance to Arawak Cay.
For a second time BTC’s Don Laing walked away with an impressive 4th place showing in his category with a time of one hour, fifty-one minutes and forty-six seconds (1:51:46).
The weekend of race events which are not just a nod to the need for a healthy lifestyle, was also a celebration of survivors who have faced cancer and won!
Among this year’s celebrants was local Attorney and all-around pillar of the Grand Bahama Community Mrs. Willie Moss who was an honouree at Saturday’s event.
