Local NGO calls on Ministers of Health

Mon, Nov 20th 2017, 02:00 PM

This past Thursday, November 16th , members of the Physically Challenged Children’s Committee (formerly the Crippled Children’s Committee) made a courtesy call on the Minister of Health Dr. Duane Sands with an objective to discuss the organization’s mandate, as well as to share some of the challenges being faced by the organization.

The Physically Challenged Children’s Committee is a Non-Governmental Organization established in 1954 by Sir Etienne Dupuch, in an effort to render assistance to children with crippling conditions arising from polio or other causes. The committee’s mandate continues to focus on addressing the needs of children ages 0-18; however, over the years, the attention has shifted to providing financial assistance to those afflicted with disorders of the limbs and spine, with particular emphasis on scoliosis: an abnormal curvature of the spine prevalent in Bahamian adolescents.

During the recent meeting, Committee Chairman Terrance Bain reiterated that the organization was there to support the Ministry of Health, and looked forward to re-establishing the ties that had contributed to the organization’s success in the past.

Minister Sands expressed to the Committee Members that he was aware of its work and felt that it was a great asset to our country; and therefore, he pledged his support in ensuring that it continues.

The Committee invites all persons who wish to become involved in the organization to contact them at 328-6147 or pccc@coralwave.com.
