The Cat Island Sailing Club Association in collaboration with The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Ltd., recently made a $2,500.00 scholarship donation for five Cat Islanders to attend the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

The hope is that this scholarship will aid in producing skilled tradesmen who will return to Cat Island and continue to rebuild the island which is still recovering from the effects of both hurricanes Joaquin and Matthew.

“Cat Island needs infrastructure development. We need Electricians, Carpenters and Plumbers that would better assist in rebuilding the island,” said four-year President of the association, Patrick Strachan.

As he demits his post as President, Mr. Strachan hopes to see the traditions of the club continue. He also believes that scholarships such as this should be a precedent for other companies and Cat Islanders to follow, in the effort to rebuild the island.

In support of his goal, Treasurer of the Association, Andrea Sturrup also hopes more Cat Islanders get involved in the rebuilding project. As a BTVI graduate, Ms. Sturrup said she is 100% behind the education BTVI offers.

“BTVI gave me an excellent career. I attribute my success in the various government departments I served in to BTVI. I am happy to see future scholars get the same kind of education,” said Ms. Sturrup.

The scholarship is available to all Cat Islanders wishing to attend the institution.
