On October 11, S.T.R.A.W. Inc, Center for Women hosted its 6th Annual International Day of The Girl at C.W. Sawyer Primary School.

The local non-profit group’s event coincided with the United Nations global celebration of girls around the world. Dominos Pizza served as a corporate sponsor for the day, supporting the initiative by donating lunch for more than 100 participants.

S.T.R.A.W. started the new school year by reintroducing its youth development and mentoring program for at-risk primary school girls under the theme Proud To Be A Girl!

The program seeks to engage adolescent girls as they transition into the complex teenage years.

According to group organizers, every year a local school is selected with the goal of exposing as many girls throughout the country to the benefits of the mentoring program.

This year’s partnership with C.W. Sawyer Primary School allowed some 100 students to recognize the importance of obtaining an education.

“The purpose of the event is to join in with the United Nations in the education of at-risk girls helping them to recognize the value of obtaining an education as global citizens and to celebrate being a girl,” said Therena Cunningham, President of S.T.R.A.W.

“Our mentors choose a local primary school, educate and engage girls in Grades 6 about the what it means to be a girl locally and globally and help them celebrate all of the positive aspects in between.”

Dominos Brand Manager Shirlen Godet said this is the second year that the brand has partnered with S.T.R.A.W. to support the community-based initiative.

“S.T.R.A.W provides an important avenue for Bahamian girls to excel. The program places a strong emphasis on the value of education and the significant contributions that women make in our community and the world. We are pleased to support their efforts,” Godet said.

Ms. Cunningham thanked the team at Dominos for assisting with the initiative. “On behalf of the adult volunteers and members of my organization, I extend our sincere appreciation to your company for partnering with us to help make this recent community service activity held at C.W. Sawyer Primary School a tremendous success.”
