Statement from the Honorable Adrian Gibson, Member of Parliament for Long Island:
Long Island Hurricane Irma Update #3:
The worst of Hurricane Irma is over.
Fortunately, I can say that no deaths or injuries have been reported.
Official assessments of south Long Island have been completed. An assessment of north Long Island is currently ongoing.
As it stands, there is no major structural damage though persons experienced minor roof damage (i.e. generally the loss of shingles).
The Police and RBDF officers are chopping and clearing downed trees in an effort to make roads passable.
There are a few fallen wires. Those wires have been tagged with florescent caution tapes so that they would be visible to motorists.
Unlike Hurricane Jaoquin, the Deadman's Cay airport is not flooded. The Deadman's Cay airport has been assessed and, by all accounts, planes can land. Whilst an official assessment of the Stella Maris airport is being undertaken, reports are that that airport is also in good condition.
Given that Long Island is presently experiencing wind gusts of up to 90 mph, NEMA has advised that the all clear will not be given until tomorrow morning.
As we await the all clear, the various shelters will remain operational.
