Summer Camp Fun for Inner City Children

Summer kicks off with the NBA finals every year but just as exciting for the children of the Baillou Hill Road, Garden Hills, and Yellow Elder communities is their own summer-time Basketball season.

Consolidated Water Company (CWCO) recently made a generous donation to help facilitate the D Squad Summer Basketball Camp. The annual sports camp was held in the AF Adderley High School gymnasium for two weeks, ending Friday July 14th.

Camp coordinator and senior boys’ basketball coach Harcourt McCoy expressed the need for financial support for initiatives like this.

“We need more people in the communities trying to do things for the young people, to keep them active and occupied, and the truth of the matter is it costs money.

“I imagine people like CWCO are trying to do a little bit of something for everybody, and we so much appreciate what they can do and have been doing and we hope that they consistently continue to work with us and keep us going.”

McCoy stated just how much corporate support and donations go a long way.

“We’ve been doing this for the last 12 years and we’re so grateful for corporate stakeholders, like Consolidated Water that helps us to be able to find a facility, pay to use it, and give the kids a little bit of refreshments during the day, because it is extremely hot during the summer.

Because of them we’re able to give them some awards on a day like today, which is the last day of camp… and basically we’re able to keep the camp up and going with the day-to-day expenses.”

The D Squad Basketball Camp welcomes boys and girls ages five to 17 who wish to learn about basketball.

“We’re a non-profit organization that seeks to try to improve the skills of anyone who is disciplined enough to come out and listen. We have an open door policy where we try to take in anywhere from 80 to 120 kids from public and private schools.

McCoy’s own daughters, Tanielle and Sarah, have each been coming to the camp since they were one. Nine-year-old Sarah shares why she enjoys being a part of it.

“It’s hard work plus fun at the same time. It’s very equal. We always get to have fun, but we always learn something at the end of the day.”

A CWCO spokesperson highlighted company encouragement for educational initiatives.

“We believe in a lot of the fundamentals this camp teaches, and we believe it is doing something good for the community. Education and character-building are very important and we want to support initiatives that are trying to impart these elements in The Bahamas.”

McCoy echoes these sentiments. “It’s something that we want to definitely continue and we hope that we have the support of Consolidated Water.”
