This aspiring female engineer is one of two females currently participating in the ALIV Graduate Trainee Programme.

She would tell you that the most valuable attributes of the programme includes the exposure it affords participants to meet and work along with diverse people, and engage in various aspects of engineering.

After completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from the University of The Bahamas, Abaco native Stevonya Thompson said being a part of the programme is an incredible experience and describes ALIV’s environment as “euphoric.”

International and local organizations exist that aim to encourage females to pursue studies in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and eventually explore careers in these fields.

Locally, ALIV has been encouraging young people to pursue professions in STEM through the establishment of its programme which seeks to foster early careers and high-performing talent capable of meeting the challenges facing the mobile industry.

Thompson, who has been a part of the programme for just over two months said she was inspired to pursue a degree in engineering because she was always a very curious and inquisitive child and always wanted to know how things worked.

Currently, she works with the site construction/civil team as well as the electrical team and said she joined the ALIV Graduate Trainee program because she needed a “fresh start.”

“I believed the programme would be the perfect opportunity. I’ve become more focused, consistent and time-conscious since joining the program,” she said.

“Within the next year, I hope to be much closer to being someone with deep expertise in both construction management and electrical engineering and all of this is happening because of ALIV.”

Presently, the programme consists largely of Engineering Graduates or Graduate Trainees from the University of The Bahamas. The Graduate Trainee Programme prepares participants for specific business and technical roles such as Service and Applicant Engineers, Finance, Marketing and Sales Partners through rotational assignments, projects and intensive course and leadership training.

To be eligible, the candidate must have a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related technical field, Finance, Marketing, Economics or Business and at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale or global equivalent and strong communication, interpersonal and influencing skills.

Successful trainees at ALIV work in various departments including Sales, Marketing, Engineering, Information Technology (IT) and Finance.

“ALIV is committed to finding and retaining the best and brightest in The Bahamas and these programmes act as a source for this.

We will continue to uphold our responsibility in the community and to our amazing ALIV teams by presenting growth opportunities to potential and current employees,” said Chairman, Franklyn Butler.

“We’ve worked persistently to support this mandate and hope to continue these efforts as the programmes enable participants to discover and explore numerous career options.”

The will also have an opportunity to engage in distance learning via Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts and the University of Manchester in London, England.
