PM Minnis invites 'New Generation of Young People' to Public Service

Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis Monday invited what he called a “new generation of young people” to serve on government boards and councils, adding that they can and will bring “new energy, new ideas and a new perspective” to those appointments.

The announcement of those appointments is expected to come “in due course.” The Prime Minister said the appointments will reflect the “tremendous diversity of Bahamian talent and experience” from the Bahamian Diaspora around the world.

“There are many talented Bahamians, including those in their 20s, 30s and 40s, 50s and 60s who have never been tapped before to provide public service,” Prime Minister Minnis said. “The commonwealth of talent that the People’s Government will call to service includes the rich pool of talent of the Bahamian Diaspora around the world.

“I will call on Bahamians from all walks of life and experiences to help chart and steer our Bahamas in a new direction.”

Addressing the Swearing-In Ceremony for Minister of Works, the Hon. Desmond Bannister and the newly appointed Parliamentary Secretaries Monday (May 22, 2017), at Government House, Prime Minister Minnis said community service and volunteerism are major planks of his Administration.

Prime Minister Minnis also announced the appointment of Government members of the Senate, Monday. Senator, the Hon. Katherine (Kay) Forbes-Smith will serve as President of the Senate. She will be joined on the Government side by Senator, the Hon. Dr. Mildred Hall (Senate Vice-President); Senator, the Hon. Juanianne Dorsett; Senator, the Hon. Jamal Moss; Senator, the Hon. Jasmine Turner-Dareus; Senator, the Hon. Ranard Henfield; Senator, the Hon. Jennifer (Jenny) Dotson-Isaacs; Senator, the Hon. Sharon Annafaye Ferguson-Knowles and Senator, the Hon. Dwight Sawyer. The Hon. Carl Bethel, Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs will serve as Government leader in the Senate. Minister of Labour, the Hon. Dion Foulkes and the Hon. Kwasi Thompson, Minister of State for Grand Bahama, Office of the Prime Minister, will also serve in the Senate.

The Prime Minister hailed the appointment of Senator, the Hon. Dr. Mildred Hall to the Senate as reflective of that spirit of community service and volunteerism due to her lifelong commitment and dedication to community service within and outside of The Bahamas.

“To make this truly a People’s Government, we must always do the hard work of democracy in a spirit of unity,” Prime Minister Minnis added.
