The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has already forecasted that there will be at least 1.4m jobs in the informational technology field by 2020.

With The Bahamas set to become the first “Smart Island”, BTC is stepping up its efforts to ensure that young ladies are aware of the limitless possibilities of this sector.

BTC is again proud to partner with the Utilities Regulatory and Competition Agency (URCA) and the other local telecommunications provider as it hosts the annual Girls in ICT Event. The event, which draws over one hundred and fifty female high school students.

This year, BTC is recognizing four ladies from the organization for Girls in ICT Day. Neisha Butler, Janice Wallace, Alphanique Duncombe and Sophia Hart-Rolle are being recognized for their work in the industry.

Neisha Butler serves as Deputy Chief Financial Officer for BTC. She talked about her journey over the last four years.

“I studied engineering and computer science, but after working abroad I made a conscious choice to move back to the region and help bridge the digital divide and wanted to spend my time and my efforts to improve the communities. My advice to young ladies entering this industry is to be brave and be fearless.”

Janice Wallace said, “I started out as an entry level technician and worked my way up to the supervisory position in the technical side of the business. Working in the technical field has allowed me to travel and broaden my horizons.

I have had the opportunity to gain numerous certifications over the years. With perseverance and hard work anything is possible.”

Sophia Hart Rolle has invested thirty years in the communications industry.

“I’ve had a colourful and memorable journey during my career. This is an ever evolving field, one where career choices are limitless.”

Alphanique Duncombe, “I came in very young and energetic and over the years I’ve been able to move up to the position of Vice President.

My recommendation would be to focus on the area that you want to study. After you’ve addressed your passion, then tie technology into that” BTC has long practiced gender equality and diversification in its hiring policies.

Embracing diversity affords the company greater adaptability, broader skills sets, multiple viewpoints and more creativity.
