Maimone Leads With 125 Remaining Championship Bahamas Main Event

Wed, Jan 11th 2017, 01:00 PM

Tuesday was Day 2 of the PokerStars Championship Bahamas Main Event. From the starting field of 738 entries, the 361 remaining players returned to action at noon, playing for shares of the $3.4 million prize pool. A total of six levels were put in the books, and play concluded with 125 players remaining.

Nick Maimone bagged up the big stack after Day 2

Nick Maimone leads the pack, bagging up the big stack of 689,000 chips. Maimone is an online hero with multiple six-figure cashes under the moniker "FU_15". He's a force at the live tables, too, having won the $25,000 High Roller in this building one year ago for a career-best score of almost $1 million. Maimone will be the man setting the pace for the Main Event when Day 3 begins.

The bubble burst during the night's final level, with Noah Boeken ending up as the odd man out. Boeken got his money in good, holding pocket tens against Tom Janssens' ace-five offsuit, but Janssens ran down a wheel to send the Dutchman off empty handed. The 143 players who outlasted Boeken are each guaranteed to earn a profit on their investment this week.

Among the Day 2 starters were several members of Team PokerStars, along with award-winning actor Aaron Paul and former All-Pro football player Richard Seymour. Both men got plenty of camera time under the bright lights of the PokerStars TV set over the course of the day, headlining the first of five days of broadcast coverage. Paul was eliminated just before the bubble burst, while Seymour advanced to Day 3 with 110,000 chips.

Team PokerStars will be well represented on Day 3, with Jason Mercier (281,000) and Barry Greenstein (95,000) both advancing. From the internet, Jaime Staples advanced with (211,500), and he'll be carrying the banner for Team PokerStars Pro Online when moving day begins. His fellow team member, Kevin Martin, was eliminated with a min-cash just prior to the end of Day 2.

There are also a pair of former PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Champions looking to tack on another title in this building. Harrison Gimbel, who won the event in 2010, finished the day with 204,000 chips, and 2012 champion John Dibella survived with 80,000. Others who finished the day near the top include Dan Colman (620,000), Mike McDonald (436,000), Rex Clinkscales (428,500), Byron Kaverman (286,000), Ryan Riess (249,500), Cliff Josephy (242,500), and Adrian Mateos (204,500).

This $5,000 freeze-out attracted a total of 738 players, generating a prize pool worth $3,376,712. The final 143 players finish in the money, and each of the final six will earn six-figure paychecks this week. A trophy and the top prize of $480,012 are reserved for the winner. Day 3 begins Wednesday at noon with five 90 minute levels on the schedule.
