COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Buckeye Cruise for Cancer, the Bahamas Roadmasters and M3S Sports will partner to present a three-mile run/walk on Tuesday February 28 in Downtown Nassau in The Bahamas, to benefit the Urban and Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research.
The 'Finish in The Bahamas Run/Walk' will be held here on the capital island of The Bahamas, starting at approximately 10 a.m that Tuesday, when the 10th Annual Buckeye Cruise for Cancer docks in The Bahamas for the day. The event will feature three-mile and one-mile options.
The 2017 Buckeye Cruise for Cancer will sail February 25 to March 7, out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, destined for The Bahamas.
More than 1,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the run/walk, with more than 500 of the participants being passengers on the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer.
A similar event in Labadee, Haiti, in February 2016, featured more than 400 runners and walkers, all passengers from the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer.
This year's event will be open to Buckeye Cruise for Cancer passengers and residents and visitors to The Bahamas. The Bahamas Roadmasters Club will promote the event to its membership, the local running and walking community and to island visitors.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer and the Urban and Shelley Meyer Fund for Cancer Research, a general cancer research support fund dedicated to advancing cancer research at Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. The Meyers established the fund in 2013 to help recruit faculty to the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Center.
Shelley Meyer, a fitness enthusiast and the "First Lady of Ohio State Football", will again serve as the Honorary Race Director of the event. Buckeyes greats including Craig Krenzel, Ryan Miller, Anthony Schlegel, and Justin Zwick, are expected to participate.
"We look forward to being a part of the winning team in the fight against cancer once again when we host the 10th Annual Buckeye Cruise for Cancer," said Lisa Cisco, founder of the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer. "It is a powerful feeling of hope when 'Buckeye Nation' unites for a common cause. Together, we can make a difference."
As mentioned, the 2017 Buckeye Cruise for Cancer will sail from February 25 to March 7, out of Fort Lauderdale.
"We are honored to partner with the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer and the Bahamas Roadmasters to provide this exciting event that will celebrate fitness and help fight cancer," said David Babner, race director for M3S Sports. "We look forward to seeing 'Buckeye Nation' take over Downtown Nassau."
