Golfing great Tiger Woods has roared again, with a stellar second round seeing him pounce up the leaderboard at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

Woods shot a blemish free 65, with seven birdies and missed only three greens in his long awaited comeback from injury.

After a one-over first round Albany Country Club, Woods was an early starter and played on his own as a result of the withdrawal of injured Englishman Justin Rose.

Woods moved from 17th into the top 10, after starting the day nine shots off the pace being set by J.B. Holmes.

After two rounds, Woods is at six-under - six shots adrift of Holmes who was midway through his round when Woods finished.

His 65 was his best round at the tournament for three years, and had commentators saying there was plenty of golfing life left in the 40-year-old yet.

After the longest stint in history as world No 1, injury and inactivity have seen Woods plunge to 898 in the world rankings.

His Bahamas return followed a layoff of 466 days and two surgeries to his back.

He was on fire early, getting a brief share of the lead as he jumped to 4-under through eight holes but two double bogeys in his last three holes sent his solid comeback round into meltdown.

He made birdies from short distance on the third, sixth, seventh and eighth. And then he lost it with a bogey on the ninth, another bogey on the 11th, then a limp finish for a 73.

On Saturday there was none of that, with putts rolling in for spectacular saves and the old Woods smile returning.

Woods was within centimetres of a hole-in-one at the par-three 12th hole at the exclusive Albany course.

"Yesterday I had it going and lost it. Today was different," Woods said.

"It feels good. I played the middle of the round better, kept the momentum going and moved myself up the board."
