Film includes submarine dive on coral reefs in The Bahamas

He has explored love aboard the ill-fated Titanic and life at full throttle in The Wolf of Wall Street but Leonardo DiCaprio may soon be best known for his most important exploration to date -- opening the eyes of millions to the impact of climate change. A documentary entitled Before the Flood will air this Sunday, October 30 for two hours on National Geographic starting at 9 pm EST. It is an historic presentation, airing on TV and streaming online without interruption.
With coral reefs of The Bahamas included in the footage, local Waterkeepers Bahamas members have been invited to deliver the message about the documentary’s importance and urge others to view the film described as riveting, packed with dramatic evidence of the escalating forces of climate change and erasing any lingering doubt about the need to rid the planet of burning of fossil fuels.

“The film promises to provide an unnerving realization of the state of the earth,” said Joseph Darville, Waterkeepers Bahamas President who also serves as Chairman of environmental advocacy group Save The Bays and is a certified climate change trainer. “The deterioration experience over the decades, a huge portion directly related to our dependence on fossil fuels, is far more frightening than we at first feared, but it is still not too late to take steps to slow the rate of change. But we must act.

“Climate change is here. It is real. You can no longer put it off and think of it as a tomorrow thing. We just witnessed the impact when Hurricane Matthew blew through The Bahamas with storm surges higher than we have ever experienced in certain areas and low-lying coastal areas impacted in ways they had never experienced before.”

Actor and environmental advocate Leonardo DiCaprio at the United Nations. Local Waterkeeper Bahamas members were asked to invite the public to the premier of DiCaprio’s documentary on climate change, Before the Flood, which airs on National Geographic Sunday at 9 pm. Coral reef footage in the film that has been called riveting was shot by submarine in The Bahamas.

The film, produced by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Fisher Stevens and Academy Award-winning actor, environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio, chronicles the journey of the latter as he travels to five continents and the Artic to get a first-hand glimpse of the effects of climate change. DiCaprio, a United Messenger of Peace, uses his celebrity status to interview world leaders including US President Barack Obama and Pope Francis.

“The very thing that The Bahamas is globally known for, our beautiful oceans and seas, which for many is their life blood, is already threatened,” shared Rashema Ingraham, Waterkeepers Bahamas Executive Director. “In Before the Flood, Leonardo DiCaprio and marine biologist Jeremy Jackson use a submarine to explore the vastness of coral reefs in The Bahamas. They are forthright about the likeliness of the reefs, the birthplace for thousands of species, dying due to the large amounts of carbon emissions being absorbed by the oceans.”

Before the Flood will premiere on the National Geographic Channel on October 30th at 9 PM (EST) and will be available in 171 countries in 45 languages.
