Courier company owner charged with gun trafficking

The owner of a courier company has been accused of smuggling eight guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from Florida.

Omar Roberts appeared before Gun Court Magistrate Constance Delancy yesterday facing 33 counts in relation to the discovery of the guns and bullets on September 16.

Roberts was charged with one count of possession of an unlicensed firearm in relation to a 7.62 assault rifle.

He was charged with seven counts of introduction of a revolver into The Bahamas in respect to three 9mm pistols, a .45 pistol, a .380 pistol, a .38 revolver, and a .40 pistol.

Roberts is also accused of introducing 214 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, 50 rounds of 7.65 ammunition, seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, 12 rounds of .45 ammunition, 32 rounds of .380 ammunition, and three rounds of .38 ammunition into the country.

Roberts faces charges of possession of unlicensed firearms with intent to supply in relation to the seized guns and possession of ammunition with intent to supply.

He is also accused of conspiring to commit the offenses.

Roberts, who was represented by Wayne Munroe, QC, Ian Cargill and Ryzsard Humes, pleaded not guilty.

He returns to court on November 21.

He was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services as the magistrate does not have the jurisdiction to consider or grant bail for the offenses.
