Palmdale Veterinary Group held an Open House Mix ‘n’ Mingle Pet Affair on December 12 to mark the opening of its newest facility, the Caves Village Veterinary Hospital in Western New Providence. This sister practice to Palmdale Veterinary Hospital shares the same patient database, and offers a range of veterinary services from routine examinations and vaccinations to advanced diagnostics, pet medications and specialised food supplies.

Designed to be a “one-stop-shop” for pet care the multi-purpose space features ultra-modern equipment and progressive technologies. In addition to the two examination rooms, there is an eye centre, dental suite, grooming facilities, with a walk-up bathtub that can accommodate four-legged pets of all sizes, and a shaded exercise and play area. The dedicated surgical suite is outfitted with medical-grade surgery lights and advanced anaesthesiology monitoring equipment. The on-site lab reduces diagnostic time drastically, meaning wait time for pet-patients is often shorter than people labs, and there is a state-of-the-art digital x-ray machine that produces remarkably clear images. The new hospital replaces a smaller satellite clinic opened in Caves Village in 2007.

Dr. Peter Bizzell who with his wife Sylvia purchased Palmdale Veterinary Clinic from Dr Gary Cash 15 years ago, said that the new facility aims to bring greater convenience to western clients along with a higher level of pet care.

“This new facility provides clients in the west with all of the amenities that they have been looking for,” said Dr. Bizzell. “This practice is as good as you would see in any first world country, fully equipped with everything to evaluate and treat a sick animal on site so we can provide greater immediacy to our patients.”

Dr. Valentino Grant, Partner and Senior Associate, is particularly excited about the recently introduced ophthalmology services which reduce the need for animals to be sent to the United States for treatment and surgery.

“For a while we’ve been aware that more can be done in terms of diagnosing, treating and resolving a number of pet health issues,” said Dr. Grant. “In the past, certain cases had to be flown to the United States to specialty clinics for care. By having the services of a US Board Certified Ophthalmology Consultant who holds clinics at the new Caves facility several times a year, we have significantly reduced the need for this. It is better for the animals and, of course, more cost-efficient for pet owners.”

The Palmdale Vet Group is the oldest private veterinary practice in The Bahamas, founded by Dr. Gary Cash in 1977. In addition to New Providence, Palmdale Vet also has clinics in Bimini and four locations in Eleuthera: Spanish Wells, Harbour Island, Governor's Harbour and Wemyss' Bight. The Group takes great pride in offering its clients a 24-hour emergency service, and has four veterinarians on staff: Doctors Peter Bizzell, Valentino Grant, Italia Sands-Johnson and Jade Greensword.
