Introducing Jonicka

There are people that love to make head-banging music, people that make music for people that just want to chill out, and of course the people that make music for the heavy metal screaming set. And then there's Jonicka "Niques" Scott whose goal is to create music that people want to listen to -- music they can relate to. She just wants to create music that people love.

Jonicka released her first single "You Got a Friend" as a solo artist. It's a song that speaks to friendship and love. And is versatile enough to embrace all loving relationships from the love between a parent and child, a love between a person and God, a love between friends. It speaks to a person always knowing they have a friend.

The chorus to the smooth R&B pop flavored lyrics say, "Whenever you call I'll be there, just to wipe away your tears. Whenever you call I'll be there, just to run away your fears. You've got a friend in me. You've got a friend indeed."

You can relate it to anything in your life. The song released by Raymond "Irate" John's Rising Sun Records was inspired by Jonicka's dedication and love for her son, Tekari Pickstock, 2. The lyrics came to her as she lay in bed with Tekari listening to a track Irate had sent to her.

"I was lying down talking to my son and telling him I'm the only mother he will ever have and that no matter what I would be there for him, while listening to the song, and I said to him that he has a friend. He was my inspiration to write the lyrics to the song and at the same time that's how God feels about us. It's a well-rounded song. Whoever listens to it could relate to it in their own way. It's not a one-sided song," said Jonicka.

The release of "You Got a Friend" meant "the world" to her. The first time she heard her song on Hot 91.7 FM radio rotation was incredible.

"I had been waiting for years to hear myself on the radio," she said. "The first time I heard it on the radio I was in awe. I sounded so different." She's just getting started, but Jonicka's ultimate goal is to be internationally known for her music. "I want to be limitless and sing music that the world hears and can relate to," she said.

Expressing herself through song has always been a part of Jonicka's life. The 26-year-old has been singing since the age of five. She sang in her church choir, and was the lead vocalist for the North Andros School choir. She realized she had a voice after hearing herself sing, and because her mother, Marilyn Adderley, always told her that God had blessed her with a ministry in her voice. Then there was the fact that people bandied about statements like "voice of an angel" or "hummingbird" when they spoke about her voice.

Jonicka describes herself as shy, but is a person who will grab the bull by the horns once she works up the nerve. She stepped outside that box one year when she volunteered to sing the lead during a church Christmas production. She did not make it through the full song. She eventually built up the courage to perform at local events, performing at weddings, parties and funerals.

As she developed as a singer, Jonicka transformed her love of writing poetry into songwriting, creating her own original songs. The young woman with the soulful sound who can sing in many ranges -- as high as a mountain top, and as low as she needs to, counts Etta James, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Faith Evans and Tina Turner among the people that she admires. Like most artists, music is something that is an inherent part of her. Something she could not shake if she wanted to.

"Music is a part of life -- a place you can escape to from the crazy world to find calm, peace. It's an escape," she said. While she goes about making the name Jonicka a household one, to date, her biggest performances have been at the All Andros and Berry Islands Regatta, and competing in the Guinness Talent Search 2012, as a part of "The Go Gettas". Jonicka signed with Irate's "Rising Sun Records" in May 2015. From here on out she says it's all about the music, as she has tons of original material just waiting for her return to the studio.

As Bahamians come to know Jonicka, she describes herself as a down to earth person who loves people, interacting with them and making them smile when they're down. When she's not in studio, Jonicka shops for goods that ships to people in the Family Islands, and is looking forward to returning to the nursing program at The College of The Bahamas. She took time off to have her son. But she says at two-years-old, he can now go to school.

The songstress also does not take her talent for granted. She says she gives God credit for the doors he opened.
