NB Pan-Hellenic Council to honour fraternal legend

The board of directors of the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council announced that they will honour four outstanding members of the fraternal movement in The Bahamas on Thursday, December 10, 2015 under the theme, Honouring Greek Legends.

Harrison Lockhart , Council President and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc said, “ I am pleased to announce that four outstanding members of the Bahamian Fraternal community will be inducted into the Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council, Hall of Fame for their invaluable contributions to fraternal life in the Bahamas and the general community this coming Thursday, December 10 at 7pm in Montague Gardens.”

The first inductee is Soror Carol Hanna who played an instrumental role in the development of the educational system in the Bahamas and the establishment of the Testing and Evaluation section of the Ministry of Education. Also, she has the esteem honour of being first Bahamian to become a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

The second inductee is Soror Laura Pratt-Charlton who established The Prescription Parlour Pharmacy in 1996 and the first compounding pharmacy in 2004. She is also the co-founded of Star Trackers Track and Field Club, actively involved in the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations and has served a term as its treasurer. Additionally, she is a Life and Silver Star Member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

The third inductee is Soror Rosemary Braynen a Charter Member and Past President of the Theta Epsilon Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Since answering the clarion call to former a chapter in the Bahamas in 1975 her chapter has grown in service to the local community giving scholarships, forming a youth arm of the Sorority (The Archonette Club), after school tutoring, providing school uniforms for needy children among other initiatives.

The final inductee is Soror Ida Poitier-Turnquest who has a distinguished career in education introducing the Total Communication method of teaching for the hearing impaired. She is a twenty-five-year Silver Star member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Members of the fraternal community and general public are invited to support this event.

The Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council established The Bahamas Greek Hall of Fame in 2004 under the presidency of Mrs. Cyndi A. Williams-Rahming. The purpose is to recognize outstanding members of the Fraternal Movement in The Bahamas, who would have made valuable contributions towards the fraternal movement and local community which had an impact internationally.

The Nassau, Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council is the local coalition body of the historically African-American Fraternities and Sororities. The local council was chartered on February 5, 1995.
