Dolphin Swim Club hosts inaugural masters event

Swimmers of all ages and skill levels came together over the weekend to take part in the inaugural Dolphin Swim Club masters event. The meet was held on Saturday at the club's home base (St. John's College's pool) and featured over 40 swimmers from various clubs around the island.

"I have to say that the turnout was excellent for the masters meet this weekend," said Dolphin Swim Club Head Coach Geoffrey Eneas. "We had a lot of former swimmers, beginners and active swimmers come out and support the event, so I would say that I was really pleased with the turnout."

Eneas added that the true benefit of the masters event is it allows swimmers from all generations to go up against each other; in the case of the younger swimmers, it gives them a chance to learn from some of the more experienced swimmers who may not be a part of any particular club.

"At Dolphin Swimming, we have learn-to-swim programs for both kids and adults and I just thought it would be a nice thing to do for those who I've taught to swim and who have carried on with it, making it a part of their everyday life" said Eneas.

With the recent success The Bahamas has enjoyed on both the junior and senior levels, regionally and international, Eneas said it's good to see kids taking a sense of pride in past accomplishments and dedicate time to swimming, even before the season starts.

"One thing about swimming, you have to be dedicated. Some of these kids can put in up to 18 hours each week just training, so it's good we get a chance to instill that discipline in them from a young age," Eneas said.

The Bahamas Swimming Federation's (BSF) swim season kicks off next week with the Dolphin Swim Club hosting the first meet of the season. The meet gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Betty Kelly-Kenning National Swim Complex.
