Nassau Rowing Club set to hold junior tryouts

In a continued effort to raise the level of awareness of the sport of rowing in the country, the Nassau Rowing Club (NRC) will be holding junior squad tryouts this Saturday at the Bahamas Medical Center on Blake Road. This year has been a landmark year for the club, which celebrated its third anniversary in August, highlighted by an appearance at the World Junior Rowing Championships this summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“We want to build off the success we saw over the summer with our junior men’s double scull crew that competed in the World Rowing Junior Championships,” said club president and head coach Kyle Chea.

“There are only so many seats in the boat, so we are naturally limited by the numbers we can take, but at the same time we want to make sure that everyone has a great time learning the sport and improving together.”

The two-man team of Lex Fountain and William Stanhope finished 18th overall at the junior championships.

Chea added that the club hopefuls would be assessed on not only raw athletic potential, but also technical ability, aptitude, attitude and their ability to work as a team.

As the first rowing club in The Bahamas, the NRC fielded the first competitive rowing entry from The Bahamas in the history of the sport – a junior varsity men’s double scull at the 40th Annual Miami International Regatta in April 2013.

In 2014, the NRC entered a novice men’s coxed four, and a women’s double scull at the 41st Miami International Regatta and the Head of the Charles Regatta.

The Nassau Rowing Club is a non-profit organization that was established on August 10, 2012 by six rowing enthusiasts with the aim of developing a premier competitive rowing program in The Bahamas for rowers of all experience, age and fitness levels.

Corporate sponsors for the group include Holowesko Pyfrom Fletcher, Baha Mar, the Bahamas Medical Center, the Old Fort Bay Town Centre, the New Providence Development Company, Odyssey Aviation Bahamas, Solomon’s Fresh Market, LennoxPaton, PCL Imports, SMG Construction & Millwork, Concept2, the Lyford Cay International School, Suntee Embroidme and Bahamas Waste.
