The mother of a sixth grade student at Governor's Harbour Primary School in Eleuthera was arrested for allegedly assaulting her child's teacher, officials said yesterday. Director of Education Lionel Sands said the incident took place on Wednesday around mid-day on the campus.

The mother, whose name is being withheld, is expected to be charged with assault in a magistrate's court on Monday, according to Superintendent Christopher Wright, officer-in-charge of Eleuthera. Wright said the woman visited the school to confront the teacher about her child's poor performance on an examination.

"It is reported that the parent came at the teacher in a rage," Wright said. "She picked up a chair and attempted to physically attack the teacher."

Wright alleged the principal of the school disarmed the parent before she could strike the teacher.

Wright claimed the parent also verbally attacked the teacher. Director of Education Lionel Sands said while the Ministry of Education is concerned about the alleged incident, it is not getting involved in the matter as it has already been turned over to the police.

"The teacher is pressing charges so we will let the law take its course," he said. Security was beefed up at several New Providence schools between 2013 and 2014 due to several reported attacks on teachers.
