On Sunday November 23 last year, the Bahamas Roadmasters Running Club (BRRC) staged its second annual Bahamas Half Marathon. The event featured a half-marathon, a half marathon relay and a 10-kilometer (k) race with part proceeds being donated to a deserving Bahamian charity. The charity of choice is decided on by voting from members, and the charity that was chosen as last year's recipient was Special Olympics Bahamas.

The local organization was very appreciative of the donation and used some of the funds to assist athletes with travel to the Special Olympics World Games that is currently ongoing in Los Angeles, California.

A few of the special athletes participated in the half marathon relay and Amanda Moncur, National Director of Special Olympics Bahamas, commented that the athletes had such a wonderful time that they are looking forward to participating in this year's event, set to be held Sunday November 22, starting at 6:00 a.m. The Bahamas Half Marathon & 10K Race is an official certified and timed event, and had over 500 participants registered with almost 100 participants coming from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

The Bahamas Roadmasters Running Club, established in 1990, is a non-profit group which promotes the sport of distance running, and through its group training runs, prepares runners to participate in half (13.1 miles) and full marathons (26.2 miles). Through the years, members have participated in the marathon majors (Berlin, New York, Boston, London, Chicago and Tokyo) and other smaller but special races in the USA, Jamaica and here in The Bahamas - Marathon Bahamas. In addition to its running pursuits, the club has made notable charitable donations to the community.

The executive team is led by its president Charles Johnson. They would like to thank sponsors J.S. Johnson, Coca-Cola and Dasani Water, Thompson Trading and Gatorade, Carpet World, BEC, Xanthons Inv. Mgmt., Bahama Boat Tours, NUA Insurance, Bill Simmons Construction, Bahamas Waste and Sands Beer for their support.

Persons wishing to participate in this year's event may register online at www.bahamashalf.com.
