If the customers barked at staff on Saturday, employees at a special event outside Solomon’s Super Center didn’t mind. They just turned around and offered them a biscuit.

Biscuits, barking and information about proper feeding and pet health care were on the menu July 4 when Solomon’s Super Centre’s Pet Department hosted its second “Love Your Pet” Day at its location on East West Highway. The event, staged outdoors so families with pets could participate, featured one-on-one discussions with Dr. Maurice Isaacs, Veterinary Officer, Department of Agriculture.

“We had a great crowd for this event last year, even if many of the participants arrived on a leash and prancing on four paws,” chuckled Monalisa Sweeting, Marketing Manager. “This year, we were very pleased that for the first time the Washington, D.C.-based Pet Food Institute (PFI) participated, taking the event to a new level.”

According to PFI’s Kurt Gallagher, Director, Communications and Export Development, events like Love Your Pet Day provide opportunities to interact with those who care about their four-legged friends.

“What we often find is that people mean well and will do almost anything for their dogs or cats, but may not know some of the basic do’s and don’ts, particularly when it comes to feeding,” said Gallagher.

“It’s fairly common knowledge that you should not feed pets chocolate but less well-known that onions, Macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, alcohol and nutmeg can be just as dangerous. Events like this provide an excellent opportunity for veterinarians who partner with the Institute to interact with pet owners and to share their knowledge.”

The partnership between Solomon’s Supercenter and the Pet Food Institute for the event was the result of the superstore’s extensive community outreach and PFI’s current campaign to improve pet care and nutrition throughout the region.
