The government yesterday officially opened the Approach Control Centre, a state-of-the-art facility, for the new radar system at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA).

Transport and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin said the multimillion-dollar facility houses cutting-edge technology and systems that will improve national air navigation services.

The new facility is also expected to resolve several issues regarding the working conditions of air traffic controllers.

The new radar system and secondary surveillance radar system are expected to be commissioned within a few months, according to officials.

The systems and new facility will provide coverage of 160 square miles from its base at the airport, and will provide better coverage, according to officials.

Hanna-Martin called the development a "transformation in our aviation sector".

"This new radar will further enhance capabilities in air navigation services," she said.

"This new building called the Approach Control Centre will be the operational center for our radar controls.

"It also includes a radar simulator room with two stations.

"These simulators will broaden and expand the training experience and training opportunities for controllers on the new radar and air traffic control systems."

According to officials, 10 Bahamians will be recruited to undergo extensive training at the new facility. International Civil Aviation Organization Technical Cooperation Director Ivan Galan applauded the government for the advancement. He said the systems will go a long way in improving safety and efficiency in the industry in The Bahamas.

"The Bahamas has taken an important step towards the achievement of the global and regional safety in air navigation," Galan said.

Prime Minister Perry Christie said as the government meets greater global air navigation standards it must find more funds to meet the associated cost of these sorts of investments.
