Odyssey Aviation has launched its new fixed base operation (FBO) and handling location at the San Salvador International Airport (MYSM), bringing a much-needed boon to aircraft servicing the island.

Odyssey Aviation San Salvador commenced the sale of fuel and handling to commercial airlines and general aviation traffic on May 18. Odyssey officials confirmed with Guardian Business that the facility has already handled a number of aircraft, which previously had been required to fly elsewhere in the archipelago for refueling at great expense to international carriers.

Odyssey President Steven Kelly welcomed the launch, which comes in anticipation of newly scheduled commercial flights from Europe and Canada through a promotion with San Salvador's Club Med Columbus Isle Resort.

"We are excited to increase our presence in The Bahamas and are enthusiastic about supporting the growth of tourism. We operate with integrity and efficiency and look forward to a great relationship with the local community," said Kelly.

Although San Salvador International Airport is one of the few airports in the country where aircraft are permitted to land under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), which allow aircraft to land after sunset, the lack of a jet fueling station had long proved costly for carriers.

The launch makes Odyssey Aviation San Salvador the first fixed base operator (FBO) at the San Salvador International Airport and the fifth outfit in Odyssey's chain. The development includes a 1,200-square-foot FBO and a 25,000-gallon jet A-1 fuel storage facility.
