The greatest science fiction film, never made

HBO announces the exclusive premiere of the documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune, Thursday, May 28th at 21:00hrs AST*, in the Caribbean. Considered as a “mind-blowing cult movie” by Variety Magazine, the documentary relates the story of the Chilean novelist, playwright, poet, actor, musician Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo, The Holy Mountain) and his most important project that was never fulfilled: his film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel, Dune. An ambitious project to change the world through art, Jodorowsky’s production included the talent of some of the greatest artists of the century: Salvador Dalí, Orson Welles, Mick Jagger and the classic English rock band, Pink Floyd.

In 1973, film producer Arthur P. Jacobs was the first to acquire the rights to Dune, but died before the film was made. Two years later, Jodorowsky acquired the rights and took creative liberties with Herbert’s original material. However, with an extensive script, the creative team he employed and the countless creative designs, the film could not move forward due to financial concerns.

Directed by Frank Pavich, the documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune tells the story of a film that began production in 1975 and was never realized, yet continues to live in the mind and imagination of its creators. Through interviews with Jodorowsky and his collaborators, Pavich highlights how the creative dreams in the adaptation of the novel, Dune, have inspired producers and writers throughout the years. The director of this film shares with viewers the inspiration the storyboard and concept art had on more recent films such as Star Wars, Terminator and Alien, all which included talent from the team Jodorowsky formed for his production.
