Junkanoo Carnival is not political

Dear Editor,

The attempt to make Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival a political event has created what is going to be an occasion for people who see the glass as half full to fully apply themselves and see the awesome benefits.

There have been unfortunate attempts to allow a great idea to be hijacked by a small band of negative people who cannot see past their noses. Rather than split hairs about a name, the optimists started looking for ways to reap a handsome payday.

Artist and artisans from across the political divide, musicians from every stratum of society and vendors who could care less about politics got in line. The dollar bill is neither red nor gold.

The foodstore owners only see money, not political affiliation. That is the irony of all this. People who have no jobs can help themselves; Junkanoo artists can empower their group members, and much needed revenue can be realized.

The sad part is some of the same people who say, "Junkanoo Carnival is going to be unsuccessful" are the same ones who are sneaking in the shadows asking for special favors.

Never mind the noise in the market, and be careful who you repeat foolishness after. The protestors in the day will be making money in the night.

The participation of all of us in Junkanoo Carnival will set the stage for better things to come in future years. I am going to join my coworkers in making this a success. I will not let anyone deter me from enjoying myself.
