Stop the negative talk about Junkanoo Carnival

Dear Editor,

The frightening tactics used in the early days after the announcement of Junkanoo Carnival have now worn off. Sensible Bahamians now see, especially from the smashing success in Freeport, that there is a real chance that the upcoming event in Nassau will be even more exciting.

The anticipation of the line-up of entertainment will go toward it being a family event that is certainly needed. The naysayers who used the church and morality, know full well that the argument is moot. If the concerns were really valid, then Junkanoo as we know it would have been stopped years ago, especially since the costumes became more practical and easier to wear in a long and grueling parade.

Bahamians know how to behave and the sanctimonious among us are nothing more than hypocrites. We are raw born Bahamians and Junkanoo is a Bahamian cultural expression. Why would we make up stories that would discourage us from being Bahamian?

It is time for us to be real. We all want to participate and we will. No ulterior motives will prevent us from doing what we do best. Could we find something positive to say about The Bahamas, please?

- Not a naysayer
