China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) last week joined efforts with Abaco officials to cleanup the Wood Cay dumpsite in North Abaco — a move that helped contain costs for a task long overdue.

In an ongoing effort to better the community for the residents, site-clearing equipment from the North Abaco Port Project were put to good use in clearing the trash from the local landfill. It not only cut costs but also helped ease the workload for the normally labor-intensive task, said Island Administrator Steve Pedican.

“Because of the right equipment it took but a few hours,” he told the North Abaco Project team members. “When CHEC first came to Coopers Town to begin the Port Project they needed an area to stockpile all land clearing and dredging material and we agreed on an area. They agreed to assist local government whenever possible and give back to the communities.

“The dumpsites have become a health hazard, attracting wild dogs, raccoons, wild cats and strong odors that, depending on wind shifts, became one of our major concerns. “We appealed to CHEC and they responded immediately and assisted us.”

Jeff Wang, country manager of CHEC, said the company was more than happy to lend the staff and site tractors needed to complete the long-awaited project. Once mobilized, the landfill clearing was completed in less than a day.

“We are always committed to assisting this community in anyway that we can,” said Wang. “Our staff understood the need for the site clearing and was very happy to be able to aid the community in this way.”

The cleanup is in line with a CHEC initiative to assist in bettering the community where the company has offices. In communities around the world, the company has engaged in a number of Corporate Social Responsibility activities including the sponsorship of athletic and sports teams, environmental cleanup campaigns, the support of cultural competitions, donations to children and old age homes and disaster relief efforts. CHEC looks forward to engaging in these kinds of activities in the Bahamas as well going forward.

“We are very grateful,” said Pedican. “And we are happy we partnered with CHEC thus the two communities have benefited from this.”3
