A man died on Saturday night when the car he was in crashed into a palm tree and burst into flames, Superintendent Craig Stubbs said yesterday. Stubbs, head of the Traffic Division, said police received reports shortly after 11 p.m. that a traffic accident occurred at the Coral Harbour and Carmichael Road roundabout.

Stubbs said the car overtook a car with members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force. He said the car missed "its turn at the roundabout and collided with a palm tree".

"On the impact the vehicle burst into flames," he said, adding that speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

"The members of the defense force were able to smash the driver's glass and pull four occupants from the car."

Stubbs said the officers pulled out three women and a man. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was listed in critical condition. The other two women were treated and discharged from hospital yesterday morning, he said.
