A Florida businessman lost $25,102 by failing to declare that he was traveling with more than $10,000.
Ralph Navabi, of Boca Raton, Florida yesterday told Magistrate Andrew Forbes that an employee with Atlantis VIP Services filled out his U.S. Customs declaration form and he signed it without reading it.
Navabi said that he was not trying to conceal the money and he told the Customs officer on January 5 that he had money in his briefcase and on his person when asked.
Forbes noted that there is nothing illegal about travelling with large sums of money, but you just have to declare it.
He said that from his interpretation of the law, he could either convict Navabi and sentence him to two years' imprisonment or confiscate the cash.
Forbes said he would give Navabi time to confer with his lawyer Bernard Ferguson to decide which option he preferred.
Navabi said, "I told him they could donate it to charity. I already lost $350,000, what's $25,000 more?"
