Bar Assoc. president says he was refused entry to court

A policeman on Thursday reportedly denied Bahamas Bar Association President Elsworth Johnson entry into the Supreme Court after he objected to his briefcase being searched.
Johnson told The Nassau Guardian he refused to allow the officer to search his bag, which contained confidential legal documents, after he had passed through the metal detector.
Johnson said the officer maintained his position even after Justice Roger Gomez's clerk said the judge said he should be allowed inside.
According to Johnson, the officer claimed that he was following a new policy, but Johnson said, "There is no rule that trumps a person's constitutional rights."
He said after leaving the building he went into other courts, including that of the chief justice, without being subjected to a search.
Johnson said he reported the matter to the chief justice and he plans to lodge a complaint to the commissioner of police.
In 2012, lawyers objected to being searched at the Magistrates' Court Complex.
The policy was relaxed after an attorney was allegedly assaulted by an officer.
