Two Kingsway Academy students have been inducted into the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), a premier organization that recognizes outstanding high school students.
Twelfth grade student Anya Phillip and 11th grade student Keishaun Bowe were inducted into the organization founded by Claes Nobel and James Lewis.
Anya, an honor roll student maintains a grade point average of 3.8. She is also the president of Alpha Kappa Tau (AKT) Honour Society and immediate past president of the Student Council. She also earned eight Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education exams.
A prefect and an active member of Key Club and the Governor General's Youth Award (GGYA), Anya is also a volunteer at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Marathon Bahamas and The Ranfurly Home for Children.
Keishaun Bowe is a 3.60 grade point average student; a member of the prefect body and the Build-a-Bridge Club.
With aspirations of obtaining a doctorate degree in pharmacology, Keishaun attributes his academic success to great study habits. And he believes that he and his peers can reach their potential if they avoid negative sources, people, places, things and habits. And he says they should always believe in themselves. And that a good scholar always reads, studies and learns as much as he can. Keishaun said giving up is never an option.
More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character -- characteristics that have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
The Society was established in order to continue Nobel's family legacy of recognizing and rewarding excellence. The organization recognizes outstanding high school students who have excelled in academics, character, leadership and service, and seeks to develop them through active participation in school programs and community outreach services.
NSHSS scholars are committed to the pursuit of academic excellence and embody the values of Nobel's family tradition of excellence, which allows them prospects of embracing opportunities such as networking beyond the class room to engage with community and business leaders; building a portfolio of life achievements; connecting with other student leaders who are similarly minded and becoming a more effective leader.
It is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities in over 160 countries.
Members must be a student in high school and must meet any one of the following criteria -- have a Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score of 1,750 or higher, 200 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) score or higher, 26 American College Testing (ACT) score or higher, score four or higher on any Advanced Placement (AP) exam, score five or higher on any International Baccalaureate (IB) exam, a 3.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 or higher scale, and be ranked in the top 10 percent in their class.
