Question: Are people with HIV at higher risk of developing mental illnesses?

Answer: HIV directly infects the brain and can lead to a wide range of mental illnesses. Approximately three out of every four people with HIV will have some impairment to the brain. One in three people with HIV will suffer from
depression. Symptoms of depression and anxiety can develop because of the fear of death and the loss of health, income, friends and family.
Moreover, up to 50 percent of patients with HIV will have some loss of cognitive function -- that is problems with processing thoughts, and problems with memory, reasoning, perception and judgment.
