A new local freight forwarding company aims to ultimately become "a UPS or FedEx of The Bahamas," according to its founder.
In an interview with Guardian Business, Mr. Ship It (MSI) Founder and Managing Director Jurelle Nairn said that MSI, which opened its doors less than four weeks ago, had already received considerable interest with nearly 1,700 registered accounts.
"As of right now we have 1,680 signed up for accounts, and they will [soon] all receive their account information and their free U.S. addresses," said Nairn, suggesting that demand for MSI's services will likely grow as a result of increased retail prices following the implementation of a value-added tax (VAT) in January, 2015.
Nairn, a former employee of U.S. supply chain management corporation ABF Freight Systems, claimed that MSI currently had the lowest shipping rate for small packages in the country, beginning at $1.30 per pound.
The fledgling company currently employs three workers and plans to hire an additional four employees and outsource from other Bahamian companies within the next two months.
Despite the company's age, Nairn envisioned MSI as an affordable and reliable system for both freight forwarding and domestic shipping needs.
"Our ultimate goal is to become a UPS or FedEx of The Bahamas," stated Nairn, noting that the country would benefit from a more extensive privatized mail system.
MSI currently manages two flights a week into New Providence, with expected delivery times between one and five business days of the customer's order. MSI will additionally ship to every Family Island and aims to distinguish itself from the local freight forwarding business through its rates and a loyalty program for long-term customers, which will reward shipping credit.
