A native daughter of the soil and a descendant from Dumfries and New Bight, Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor Christine King's passion for service took her beyond New Providence where she has settled the last 24 years.
It took King back to her hometown in Cat Island to give back to the children in the island's northern settlements - Dumfries and Orange Creek. She was instrumental in funding and organizing the construction of two playgrounds.
Nearly 30 Kiwanians recently travelled to Cat Island to officially launch the 2013-2014 Kiwanis Bahamas signature project. Located just behind Dumfries and Orange Creek Primary Schools are playgrounds constructed with all-native cedar wood carved and held together with stainless steel screws. Logs are buried in the ground at the required specifications.
The Kiwanis Club expressed its gratitude to its partners who assisted with the project and contributed financially via fundraisers - particularly the 2013 Installation Ball and LG Christine's signature birthday fundraiser Party for a Park.
Students from both schools gathered at the Orange Creek playground where a ceremony was held. After the brief opening, the children ran in excitement to the playgrounds. They were treated to a fun day with food, fun and fellowship.
Accepting the playgrounds gift was Garth King, superintendent of education for Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador; Olivia King, principal at Orange Creek Primary and Coreen King, principal of Dumfries Primary. The representative of the local contractor, Pamela Poitier of Da Com UP Group, presented the park to Kiwanis.
While on Cat Island Kiwanians visited the two schools and made small monetary donations, along with a copier equipped with paper and replacement ink.
Kiwanians visited the Key Club at Old Bight High School where members held their meeting and officers received training.
Key Club International, the largest high school service organization in the world, empowers its members to lead and serve by cultivating leadership skills, developing friendships and performing community service.
