Trying to pass off tilapia as grouper

Dear Editor,

Recently, I dined at several restaurants in Nassau and Freeport and at those times started noticing a particular practice taking place with a high degree of regularity.

On virtually every occasion, if the menu said grouper, particularly boiled or stew fish, it was almost always tilapia rather than grouper that was served.

On occasion it was some other fish, hardly known to Bahamians. I also noticed that this deliberate scheme of saying grouper but serving tilapia is heavily promoted in restaurants where tourists dine most.

I first noticed the trend in the Lucaya area and then observed that it had spread to more than enough restaurants in Nassau.

If you want "real" grouper, you had better eat at one of the Over the Hill restaurants. If they say it's grouper, it is grouper. If it is not grouper, they say so and they offer you a good alternative (mutton fish or snapper, etc.).

More tragically, these 'bait and switch' restaurants sell tilapia at grouper prices. What a joke. How ridiculous to take a cheap fish and sell it at grouper prices. Is there anyone regulating this industry?

Naturally, as with all matters of concern in this nation of ours, this letter might be an interesting read but not one thing will be done about it.

- The Accountant
