MIAMI (AP) -- American Airlines is adding flights from Miami to a second city in Haiti.
The airline based in Fort Worth, Texas, announced Monday that daily service between Miami International Airport and Cap-Haitien, Haiti, would begin Oct. 2. The route joins the airline's current nonstop service from Miami to Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.
Cap-Haitien is located on Haiti's northern coast. Airline executive Art Torno in a statement called the new service "an important catalyst to develop the north coast and open up this historically significant destination."
In a statement from the airline, Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said the Cap-Haitien route "represents a tremendous opportunity for significant economic impact" by connecting Miami with Haiti's second-largest city.
Airline officials said the new route will be operated with a Boeing 737-800.
