The men and women of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) were recently praised for not only playing a vital role in guarding the country's heritage, but also making the country "safer, stronger and more just" by helping to promote public safety and security while upholding the rule of law.
"Some of your efforts, such as your performance in regard to the crime-fighting initiatives of the government of The Bahamas, your participation in the Urban Renewal program and most recently in the successful staging of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Relays Bahamas 2014, speaks volumes about your dedication, discipline and willingness and has captured the media headlines," Minister of National Security Dr. Bernard Nottage said.
"And while other significant contributions remain unnoticed, all of your work is vital and has made our country safer, stronger and more just, while inspiring your colleagues and counterparts throughout the public service," Dr. Nottage added.
Addressing officers, warrant officers, marines and family members attending the RBDF's recent 2014 Commissions and Award of Decorations Ceremony at Government House, Nottage applauded the honorees and recipients for "going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure The Bahamas' national security".
"I am grateful for your leadership and your many sacrifices today and every day," Nottage said. "I recognize the achievements we celebrate did not come easily. I know you have been called upon on many occasions to spend long hours at work, sacrificing time with family and friends in order to achieve the critical work the Bahamian people have entrusted you with.
"I look forward to all that we must and surely will accomplish together in the days, months and years ahead. The government and people of The Bahamas value your extraordinary dedication and your commitment to duty."
Nottage commended the men and women receiving decorations for discharging their duties with "talent, skill grace and courage". Recipients were presented with long service and good conduct awards for 18, 25 to 29 and 30 or more years of continuous service to the RBDF.
Lieutenant Byron Jerome Brown and Sub Lieutenants Elwood Carlos Simms, Livingston Alder Brown and Lennox Craig Coleby were presented with their commissions and swords by Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes. Nottage also paid special tribute to the families of the honorees.
"As we highlight the achievements and recognize the contributions that these honorees have made, I would also like to recognize all of the proud family members that have taken the time to be with us today. Thank you for your support and many sacrifices in helping your loved ones fulfill the defence force's top priority - guarding our heritage. Every one of you shares in the prestigious awards that have been bestowed today."
