In its third year, Summer Arts Immersion (SAI) returns this July to offer a 2-week online learning program designed for arts-minded high school seniors and recent graduates to gain experience in fine art and digital media practices.

On Thursday, 25th June sixteen candidates were accepted into this year’s cohort. Since 2018 SAI has welcomed applicants from across the archipelago. Next month students from New Providence, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama, and Abaco will enjoy SAI’s first cross-island virtual learning experience.

“By innovating programming to the challenges of the pandemic, SAI is pleased to offer students a safe space for sharing, learning, and collaborating creatively online.” said Keisha Oliver (SAI Co-founder) SAI prides itself on offering students academic and artistic exposure which includes access to professional Caribbean creatives.

This year instruction will be lead by Bahamian multi-media artist Durelle Williams who has ten years experience in illustration and animation and Jamaican art educator Zorhia Allen who has training in online teaching.

“We’re grateful for partnerships with institutions like the University of The Bahamas and Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica that continue to support the SAI vision.” said Antonius Roberts (SAI Co-founder) SAI 2020 has been made possible by the generosity of donors and patrons of the arts.

Particularly, The Charitable Arts Foundation whose efforts continue to bolster Bahamian art and the creative economy. In partnership with the Beverly Ann and Lavar Munroe (B.A.L.M) Foundation, SAI’s 2020 Rising Star student will be the recipient of the first B.A.L.M scholarship.

"The scholarship will provide the recipient with $1,500.00 in tertiary education tuition towards a degree in the arts. B.A.L.M's intention is to facilitate, support, and encourage Bahamian students who exemplify great potential in the creative arts." said Lavar Munroe (B.A.L.M Founder) For more information please email info@saibahamas.com and follow SAI on instagram, facebook, and twitter.

Jazz In The Gardens (JITG) and its ancillary events were the latest to fall victim to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). City of Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert on March 11 at 10:48 p.m. signed a local state of emergency for the City of Miami Gardens due to the virus. “After much consideration and in abundance of caution, I’ve made the decision to postpone the Jazz In The Gardens Music Festival and its ancillary events – Poetry in the Gardens, Women’s Impact Luncheon, the official press conference and Opening Night Party, as well as the Music Festival on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15,” said the mayor in a written release on the JITG site. While he knows people are disappointed, the mayor said the decision was made with fans of the event in mind.
