Not many people can boast of becoming an author at the age of 13, but Sierra Blair, a ninth grader at Kingsway Academy, did just that, launching a writing career over the summer break.

Sierra’s first children’s book, Roman & His Mean Family, is a collaboration with her mom, media and public relations professional Tosheena Robinson-Blair.

The book, available on Kindle and in paperback from Amazon.com, was inspired by Sierra’s one-year-old brother, Roman.

“Writing, editing, watching the illustrations come together, and marketing the book has been an amazing learning experience,” said Sierra, an honor roll student.

“Parts of the process were very tedious, like formatting the book to upload to Kindle, and some parts were fun. What I loved the most was getting to see my dreams come true when the book became a reality.”

The second book in the series, Roman & The Pink Flamingos, is already in production.

Ms Robinson-Blair had the idea to pen a children’s book 13 years ago, shortly after Sierra’s birth.

“My children are my muse,” she said. “When Sierra was Roman’s age I felt drawn to writing a children’s book with Sierra as the main character, but at the time I was finishing up my Bachelor’s degree and went straight into my Master’s studies, so the idea died, or so I thought.”

This summer the idea of writing a children’s book tugged at the mother of two, this time with her daughter as co-author. The family’s goal was to have at least one book written and published before the end of summer.

“It was pretty easy to write the book, since we were drawing from real life, then worked out the details,” said Sierra. “My mom and I think a lot alike. We have the same mindset, so it was easy for me to work with her on how we wanted the book to develop, how we wanted it to look. I think it came out pretty well.”

After searching for illustrators, the Blairs tapped local graphic artist Rashad Cash for the job.

“Rashad was a natural fit for us. We were ecstatic when he came on-board,” said Ms Robinson-Blair. “He is super talented, deadline-oriented, and more importantly, he shared our vision for the book and was able to bring our story to life.”

The Blairs say that Roman & His Mean Family is ideal for teaching the concept of boundaries to children six and under. In the 25-page picture book, precocious Roman believes his family is “mean” since they won’t allow him to circumvent boundaries set for his own protection.

The book reinforces simple but nevertheless important messages for little children such as staying away from a hot stove and not running into the road.

According to the Blairs, the second book in the series is even more engaging.

“What sets our series apart from other children’s books is the uniquely Bahamian experiences Roman is set to engage in,” said Ms Robinson-Blair. “For the most part, his adventures are going to take place against a distinctively Bahamian backdrop.”

The first-time authors reported sales have been “encouraging” and “steady” thus far.

“Sales are important to us, of course, but I feel like I’ve already won,” said Sierra, who has appeared as a guest on top radio shows, including Dwight Strachan’s Morning Blend, The Conversation with Shenique Miller, and Ed Fields Live.

“This is something my little brother can look back on and know how much we love and celebrated him. Plus, I get to work with my mom.”
