Thank you to those who came out and supported the BHS on Saturday at the Goodfellow Farms Family Fun @ the Farm! Many people enjoyed steel drum music, tasty food, and good company for an evening out in support of the animals. There was a raffle and a silent auction, both well-supported. Abaco Parrot Population Increasing

The Bahamas National Trust in conjunction with Dr. Frank Riviera and Caroline Stahala recently conducted an intensive survey of the Bahama Parrot on Abaco.

Population surveys were conducted in 2002 resulted in estimates of the Abaco
parrot population of about 2,500 parrots with similar values in the following years. This year  Dr. Frank Rivera and Caroline Stahala, who took part in the initial surveys ,helped by  BNT wardens and volunteers, conducted a 10 year follow up survey to determine the change in the Abaco parrot...

PARADISE ISLAND, THE BAHAMAS (April 19, 2012) – Atlantis, Paradise Island's Animal Rescue team has successfully released two manatees in the Great Harbour Cay area of The Bahamas, marking Atlantis’ first-ever live release of its kind. Rita and Georgie, a mother and calf, have been in the care of Atlantis' Dolphin Cay team since October 2011, where the manatees received health assessments and expert nutritional care.

PARADISE ISLAND - Atlantis, Paradise Island, an Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) accredited facility, achieved a major milestone as the first and only facility in the world to have reproductive success of the smalltooth sawfish, a critically endangered species. Two male and two female pups were born at the facility in The Bahamas on April 12, 2012. The smalltooth sawfish is listed on Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Bahamas Humane Society would like to thank Inspector Carl Thurston for his thirty years at the BHS. Carl will be retiring on Tuesday, May 29th. His calm and pleasant demeanor will be missed around the office, and anyone following in his footsteps will be hard-pressed to navigate the back roads of this island as successfully as he does. Carl will be retiring to his native Cat Island where he plans to enjoy some well-earned rest. Thank you, Carl, for your many years of dedicated service!
