The Powerade Potcakeman Triathlon 2024: Overcoming Windy Conditions for a Successful Race

The Powerade Potcakeman Triathlon returned triumphantly for its eleventh edition on Sunday, February 25th 2024 at Jaws Beach. Athletes braved challenging windy conditions and choppy waters, showcasing their resilience and determination in support of Baark!'svital spay, neuter and education efforts for animal welfare in The Bahamas.

Race Director Lori Roach commented, "Despite the tough conditions, this year's PoweradePotcakeman Triathlon was a resounding success, showcasing the unwavering dedicationof our athletes and supporters."

In the men's division a thrilling battle unfolded between Launy Duncombe and MalcolmMenzies, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats until the very end. Duncombe justclinched victory with a time of 1:01:36, closely followed by Menzies in second place witha time of 1:01:40, while Jorge Marcos secured third place with a time of 1:08:43.

In the women's category, Kami Roach dominated the competition for the secondconsecutive year, completing the race in 1:23:14, followed by Barbara Kiraly finishing at1:25:24 in second place, and Laura Morley securing an impressive third place with a timeof 1:25:51 in her first triathlon !

The oldest participant Richard Ballance, 66 years young, showcased the timeless spirit ofathleticism.

The relay event saw Team Trivincible triumphing in the all-female category, while Too Koolto Tri emerged victorious in the mixed team division, and Eastside Eagles claiming topspot in the all-male category. They featured Justin Higgs representing BahamasWholesale Agency and their longstanding support for the event who expressed hisenthusiasm, labeling the event as his favourite and best triathlon in The Bahamas ! BWAalso very generously donated all proceeds from bar sales to the fundraising total.

Adult finishers were treated to a burger or hot dog from the renowned Rotary Burger Van,accompanied by a White Claw hard seltzer. Children received a delicious Dunkin’ donut.The FYP Junior and Puppy races added a fun family-friendly atmosphere dimension to theday, engaging participants as young as aged 6. The raffle draw marked the culmination ofthe event, with the top prizes including a bike courtesy of Cycles Unlimited and an iPhone15 from Aliv. Ronnie Archer Photography was on hand to capture stunning images of theevent, preserving the memorable moments for participants and spectators alike.

Jeremy Paul Wins The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at Sandals Emerald Bay

In the final round, with back-to-back bogey-free 5-under 67s,Jeremy Paul, a 29-year-old golfer from Germany and a graduate of the University of Colorado, emerged the winner of this year’s Korn Ferry Tour at The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic. Now in its 7th edition, the elite golf tournament took place 14-17 Jan., at the fascinating Sandals Emerald Bay ReefCourse in Exuma. Paul was one of 132 professional golfers who vied for one of the 30 coveted cards in this year’s PGA Tour.

Paul’s winning total – 17-under 271 – ranked second in tournament history, only behind Zecheng Dou’s18- under 270 in 2019. His triumph not only showcased his golf prowess but also underscored TheBahamas' unmatched capability as a premier destination for hosting world-class sporting events.

The Hon. I Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation,extended congratulations to the winning athlete, "Jeremy Paul's remarkable victory adds a newchapter to The Bahamas' legacy as a destination that seamlessly blends sports and paradise. The Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the launch of a survey aimed at evaluating and enhancing dinghy sailing programs throughout the Caribbean. This initiative underscores the CSA's commitment to promoting and advancing the sport of sailing in the region.

The survey, which will be distributed to all Caribbean dinghy sailing programs, seeks to create a comprehensive inventory of the current active programs. The CSA aims to gather valuable insights into the various programs, challenges faced, and the overall state of dinghy sailing in the Caribbean.

Key objectives of the survey include:

1. Program Overview: Obtain detailed information about existing dinghy sailing programs, including their locations, size, and key features.

2. Challenges Faced: Identify common challenges and obstacles faced by dinghy sailing programs, with a focus on understanding the specific issues hindering growth and development.

3. Inventory of Assets: Create a comprehensive inventory of dinghy fleets, infrastructure, and other resources available to sailing programs across the Caribbean.

4. Community Engagement: Assess the level of community engagement and involvement in dinghy sailing programs, including the number of participants, volunteers, and supporters.

5. Future Opportunities: Explore potential growth areas and opportunities for collaboration within the Caribbean sailing community.

The information gathered through this survey will play a crucial role in shaping the CSA's strategies to support and strengthen dinghy sailing programs. By understanding the current landscape and challenges faced by programs across the region, the CSA aims to implement targeted initiatives and provide resources to overcome obstacles.
