Women's Conference to Focus on Power of Personal Storytelling
Tue, May 30th 2023, 09:41 AM
Exuma native Shem Bodie Neilly is giving back to the Bahamian community in a special way this summer. In less than two weeks, women will gather for “Life’s Chapter Real Talk” at Margaritaville Beach Resort during an intimate conference under the theme #NoBreaksJustPowerHer.
Through her non-profit organization, Ladies With Chapters, Neilly is committed to using the power of stories to inspire women of various ages. The event, which will be hosted by local talent Rika C., is a platform for participants to have discussions, be empowered, and leave feeling motivated.
“With all the demands that society has placed on women, we often find ourselves overwhelmingly shaken, broken, shattered, tried, and tested. We rarely have the opportunity to recharge and reset ourselves. It's events like these that help to pour into our cups, empty or half full. We all need it,” said Neilly.
Specialty speakers include international guests such as Secily Wilson, Michelle Cadore, Whitney House, Rosena Duncanson, and Christina Burrows-Cleare.
Neilly noted, “When women step out into the world, many of us are only seen for our outward appearance. However, we all share something special, we all have a story. Our lives are made up of many chapters.”
Neilly added, “Ladies With Chapters was cultivated from the humble upbringing of my life. I continue to challenge myself professionally and personally. I've pushed through many obstacles and was faced with many life adversities to be where I am today. My passion and purpose have allowed me to use my voice to help inspire women, building a platform so they too can have a voice to share their story. Most importantly reminding them that there is strength in vulnerability and that each story is meant to be shared. Stories have strength and they too can concur and persevere.”
Though now based in Orlando, Florida, Neilly explained that it was important to her to host the conference in The Bahamas.
“As a Bahamian woman, I know firsthand how our strength can be tested. We rarely have the opportunity to recharge, reset and pour into ourselves. Today, maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes a lot of resilience and willpower and I am happy to play a small role in helping to reenergize and reinvigorate women.”
Also aware of the heavy price tag usually associated with women's events, Neilly was likewise committed to making the conference, which will feature a buffet-style dinner, affordable.
"An extravagant and elegant event can be so out of reach for the women who need it most. My goal is to create an empowering and inspiring event at a reasonable cost but with the same high-quality speakers and atmosphere”, she said.
The theme #NoBreaksJustPowerHer relates to a woman being able to tap into the power that lies within her. It means using personal power and is a reminder that our strength is within us, to keep going and never quit on our God-given purpose. It also tugs on a woman’s ability to identify what her purpose is and how to tap into it.
The conference will be a channel for “real, deep talk and personal discussions”. While there will be a keynote speaker and panel, participants will be able to ask questions and give feedback as they learn. All women over the age of 18, but especially between 25-30 years old are encouraged to attend. Those above the 30-year-old mark are likewise invited to not only gain from the conference but can connect with those younger and share key life lessons, and how they have conquered.
Neilly has given numerous complimentary conference tickets to women in the community including senior students of Doris Johnson Senior High School. Persons interested in the Sunday, June 4th conference can purchase tickets by visiting https://LWC_NoBreaksJustPowerHer2023.eventbrite.com. The event will additionally feature a 3-day resort stay grand prize, other door prizes, surprises, entertainment, and a disc jockey.
The #NoBreaksJustPowerHer women’s conference will allow participants to exemplify the strength that comes with being vulnerable and recognize how pushing through each obstacle shapes a brighter future. No matter the age, guest speakers and participants alike will be able to inspire and uplift each other through stories of adversity and perseverance.

The Bahamas gets another chance to qualify for Paris '24
Fri, May 12th 2023, 09:19 AM
The road to the 2024 Olympics for The Bahamas' senior men's national basketball team is still active as the team was drawn into Group A of the FIBA Americas Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament, set for August 12-20 in Argentina. The host city will be confirmed at a later date.
Drawn into Group A with The Bahamas are two familiar teams in Panama and host country Argentina along with Cuba. The Bahamas is seeded at number three in that group.
The tournament is for teams that did not advance to the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Basketball World Cup 2023. It gives those teams hopes of still reaching the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. The winners of each pool will face each other and that winner will line up at one of next July's FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments with the winner of those clinching spots for Paris 2024.
With the tournament being in August which is the offseason for most of the Bahamian premier basketball players who are overseas, it is possible that a number of them, including National Basketball Association (NBA) players Chavano 'Buddy' Hield, Kai Jones and DeAndre Ayton, will suit up for The Bahamas. The Bahamas has never advanced to the Olympics in basketball. They will need all three of those players for a better chance of moving on to the next tournament.
The Bahamas played Panama and Argentina in the 2022-2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers. Argentina won both matchups and The Bahamas split their games with Panama. The last time The Bahamas played Cuba was back in July 2021 and it ended with a victory for the Bahamian side.
The Bahamas played Panama in February of this year and it ended with Panama winning 88-66 on their home floor. The Bahamas hosted Panama in November 2022 and won 83-79. In that same month, The Bahamas hosted Argentina and fell apart late in that game to lose, 80-76. The two teams faced each other last summer with Hield and Jones playing. Argentina won that game, 95-77, in Argentina.
The Bahamas is ranked at number 56 in the latest FIBA world rankings that came out in February 2023. They are 12th in FIBA Americas. Argentina is ranked at number four in the world and number two in FIBA Americas. Panama is close to The Bahamas at number 51 in the world and 10th in the region. Rounding out the group at number 70 in the world and 15th in the region is Cuba.
Pool B includes Uruguay, Colombia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Chile.
The schedule will be released at a later date.

Statement by HE V. Alfred Gray on the passing of Consul-General Al Dillette

Minister of Foreign Affairs - Statement on the Passing of Mr. Al Dillette
Wed, May 3rd 2023, 04:05 PM
I regret to report the death of Albert King Dillette, known to his friends, including me as Al Dillette. Mr. Dillette died at home in his official residence in Toronto last evening. He was discovered by the Consulate General’s staff when he could not be reached this morning. The emergency services with the consulate staff entered the premises and discovered that he had passed away. It appears that he died from natural causes.
For me personally, this is a great loss. We have been friends, confidantes, and colleagues since we were boys. I have spoken to his wife Kathy to express the condolences of the nation and the Ministry.
Prime Minister Philip Davis was informed, and he too has expressed his condolences to Mrs. Dillette and the children and his siblings.
Al Dillette was one of the finest journalists this country produced. He loved to tell the stories of his time at ZNS and his role in defining broadcasting, public relations, and the history of our country since independence . He was a champion of life in Freeport and in Grand Bahama. He was looking forward to the 50th anniversary celebrations of our country, especially now that he was in an official role, a role he inaugurated just a few short weeks ago when we were all gathered in Canada.
We have lost a treasured son, friend, and brother.
Mr. Dillette is survived by his wife Kathryn, two sons, Adam and Robert (Aafiah); one daughter, Alana (Derrick) and three grandchildren, Xavier, Maya and Elijah.
We say in his passing to God be all the glory for a life well lived.
May he rest in peace.
