NASSAU, BAHAMAS - On Friday evening held on the patio of the lush property at Sapodilla Estates, guests were adorned in all-black attire as they enjoyed an evening of love.

A record number of men, women and children of all ages showed up February 22 to walk a mile in the shoes of someone affected by cancer, but this year’s Stride for Life had a special grand finale – more than 150 who huffed and puffed and made their way from the Cancer Society headquarters over the Paradise Island bridge and back walked away with something extra, a backyard farming kit.

The kits were distributed by the Agricultural Development Organization at a booth made possible by RBC, one of the major sponsors of the event and a strong corporate partner of the non-profit bringing new energy to agriculture at every scale.  

“We were overwhelmed by the interest,” said ADO Executive Chairman Philip Smith. “We thought people might be tired after the walk, but they mobbed the ADO table, at times standing in line five and six rows deep wanting to get a backyard farming kit. It’s a wonderful sign. Bahamians are taking a new look at growing their own, eating healthier and taking pride in planting.”

ADO was formed just over two years ago by Mr. Smith, who had served as executive director of the Bahamas Feeding Network since its inception nearly 10 years earlier.

“COVID taught us the need to take food security in The Bahamas seriously,” he said. “We can go on feeding people forever, and there will always be a need, but we can reduce that need and create a healthier, happier population by growing more of what we eat and eating what we grow. This was an excellent opportunity to distribute the kits with a variety of seeds and all the starting ingredients they need, a bit of soil, irrigation tubing, fertilizer. We are extremely grateful to RBC for donating its booth, the kits, and being such an invaluable corporate partner to ADO.”

RBC has also funded two of the six community farms ADO started. Since inception, ADO has supported farms at more than 30 schools on four islands and distributed backyard farming kits to nearly 4,000 persons. Field officers are available to assist. The organization works closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and has set an ambitious goal -- 20,000 backyard farming kits by end of 2026.
