Opening: We Suffer To Remain + Traversing the Picturesque Hosted by The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas

Thursday 22nd March 2018  7:00 PM

On Thursday, March 22nd, 2018, starting at 7 p.m., the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas invites you to the opening of our two brand-spanking-new spring exhibitions.

?We Suffer To Remain,? a collaborative exhibition with the British Council, features Scottish artist Graham Fagen?s Venice Biennale project ?A Slave?s Lament? together with the work of invited Bahamian artists Sonia Farmer, John Beadle and Anina Major, who have been asked to respond to this historic reggae soundclash. This exciting collaborative moment looks at the vestiges and historical significance of slavery and its impacts on postcolonial societies.

As an accompanying collection, ?Traversing the Picturesque: For Sentimental Value,? is a historical survey showcasing works from the 19th century through 1960, detailing the significance and the lasting power of the colonial gaze in relation to The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean. As a two-part survey, this segment will show over 100 critical works?most never seen by the public?borrowed from several prominent national and international collectors.

The opening will begin at 7 p.m. For the thrilling double opening the NAGB will offer Bahamian fusion culinary bites featuring locally sourced ingredients and lively entertainment over the course of the evening. The NAGB welcomes the British Council cohort including Director of Exhibitions, Gemma Hollington; Caribbean Arts Manager, Annalee Davis; and artist Graham Fagen.

The exhibitions will open under the patronage of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.

Location:
The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas
