UBFIT Fun Run Walk Skate 5K/10K 2017 was the first fundraiser of its kind at University of The Bahamas, and its undeniable success paves the way for deeper and stronger ties between the university and the community we serve. The event targeted 500 runners, walkers and skaters, and because of the enthusiastic support, was sold out before Race Day. Health and Safety Committee member Kandice Eldon, an Assistant Director in the Office of University Relations was instrumental in the conceptualization of the UBFIT race model which brought together the UB community, alumni and friends of the university to promote health and wellness. The event was the culmination the institution’s annual Health and Safety Week, held under the theme “Fit. Healthy. Safe.”
“The genesis of this event was a desire to see the university community and friends of UB come together for a worthy cause. As a committee, we determined that funds raised would augment UB’s Annual Fund and increase mobility on campus for students with special needs. The event was a resounding success with the assistance of UB’s Health and Safety Committee and additional volunteers. We are extremely thankful for our sponsors and supporters and believe this will be a memorable major fundraising event for years to come,” noted Mrs. Eldon.
On Race Day, the new main entrance of University of The Bahamas was awakened at the wee hours of the morning as hundreds of people showed up for UBFIT, including UB stakeholders, students, faculty, staff and alumni. Many stayed for the fun-filled post-race UB Blue Celebration and Health Expo.
The event raised $35,000 from sponsorships, registrants and generous, in-kind donations. Corporate Bahamas fully supported the initiative with sponsorship from Title Sponsor Generali, Platinum Sponsor National Health Insurance (NHI), Gold Sponsor BTC, Silver Sponsor Scotiabank, Bronze Sponsors JS Johnson & Bahamas Power and Light and Community Sponsors Public Hospitals Authority, Insurance Companies of The Bahamas & UB Alumni Association.
UBFIT is now a signature event on the University of The Bahamas calendar with the goal to expand to a half marathon, and eventually a full marathon.
