1:30 pm - Election officials: So far, so good
Voters started lining up at the polls early this morning, and so far there has been a steady turnout as Bahamians cast their votes throughout the country, election officials reported this afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Quinn McCartney told Guardian News Network that up to 1 p.m. there had not been any major incidents reported at any of the polling stations in the 38 constituencies.
He said that as to be expected, police officers are out in full force. McCartney said that apart from some tension over where to set up party tents outside of the individual polling station areas, things were going smoothly.
Prime Minister and Free National Movement Leader Hubert Ingraham, 64, said he was spending Election Day at home.
"I await the results of the people," Ingraham said. "I am making boil' fish right now. I do nothing on this day but wait for results."
According to aides of Progressive Liberal Party Leader Perry Christie, 68, he had visited several polls earlier in the day to get a feel of how the voting was going and to lend his support to party candidates.
Meanwhile, at 1 p.m., Democratic National Alliance Leader Branville McCartney was at the Jordon Prince William High School, where some of the polling stations of the Bamboo Town constituency are located.
"For the most part we are anticipating some good results after 6 p.m. today," said McCartney, who pointed out that not many voters were wearing their party colors to the polls.
McCartney, who turned 45 on Sunday, said he was very relaxed, and would watch the election returns from home.Traffic is backed up in many of the areas where voting is taking place but officials are hopeful that he voting process will continue to run smoothly as the day progresses.
Parliamentary Commissioner Errol Bethel said there had been no major hiccups, so far, and all is going well.
He said a few polls opened a few minutes late because they were busy counting ballots.
